Choosing the Right Reinforcement

Each type of reinforcement suits a different part of a concrete structure.

Square mesh: Wires run at equal spacing in both directions, giving uniform strength across the sheet. It's widely used in house slabs, driveways, paths and shed floors.

Rectangular mesh: Heavier main wires run one way with lighter cross wires, suiting elements that need more strength in one direction. You'll find it in pavements, suspended floors and precast panels.

Trench mesh: These narrow strips of mesh sit inside footing trenches. They reinforce strip footings and edge beams in residential construction.

Reinforcing bar: Individual bars add strength where mesh alone isn't enough. Engineers specify them for beams, columns, walls and slab thickenings.

Square mesh has wires at equal spacing in both directions, while rectangular mesh uses closer, heavier wires in one direction. The right choice depends on how loads travel through the slab, which the engineer specifies on the drawings.

In SL82, "S" means square, "L" refers to the low-ductility steel class, "8" relates to the wire size and "2" indicates 200mm spacing. On an SL82 sheet, that works out to 7.6mm wires at 200mm centres.

Trench mesh is a narrow strip of reinforcement placed in strip footings and edge beams, usually supplied in six-metre lengths. It comes in three, four or five-wire widths to suit the size of the footing.
