Bar Chairs, Spacers and Fixing Supplies

Reinforcement only works if it sits in the right position within the concrete. Without the right chairs and spacers, steel can end up too close to the surface, leading to corrosion and cracking over time.

At East Coast Steel Supplies, we stock concrete accessories in Mackay that support your reinforcing and prepare the site for a pour. Our range covers bar chairs and spacers, tie wire, polythene building film and safety caps for exposed bar ends. Having these on the same order as your steel saves a separate trip and keeps your fixers working.

Pair your accessories with our reinforcing bar and mesh for a complete package. Call 0450 901 655 to add them to your order.

Essential Reinforcing Accessories

Each accessory plays a specific role in getting reinforcement placed and protected correctly.

Bar chairs: Chairs hold mesh and bar at the correct height inside the slab. This achieves the concrete cover set out in your engineering drawings.

Spacers: Spacers keep reinforcement away from formwork and trench walls. They come in plastic, wire and concrete to suit different applications and loads.

Tie wire: Fixers use tie wire to secure bars and mesh together at intersections. It stops the reinforcement shifting while concrete is placed and vibrated.

Building film & safety caps: Polythene film forms a moisture barrier under slab-on-ground construction. Safety caps cover exposed bar ends to reduce the risk of injury on site.

Concrete cover is the distance between the reinforcement and the outer surface of the concrete. Adequate cover protects the steel from moisture and corrosion and helps the structure achieve its required fire rating.

Chair height is set by the cover specified on the drawings and where the reinforcement needs to sit within the slab. On soft ground or sand, chairs with a wider base help stop them sinking under load.

Polythene building film acts as a vapour barrier, reducing the moisture that rises from the ground into the slab. It also stops the concrete losing water into the ground while it cures.
