Where Deformed Bar Is Used

Deformed bar reinforces a wide range of structural concrete elements.

Footings and pads: Bar gives strip footings, pad footings and piers the strength to spread building loads into the ground. It's often combined with trench mesh on residential jobs.

Beams and columns: These elements carry concentrated loads and use heavier bar, with ligatures holding the cage together. Engineers set the bar size and spacing to suit each load.

Walls and retaining walls: Vertical and horizontal bars help walls resist bending from soil and water pressure. Starter bars tie the wall into its footing.

Slab edges and thickenings: Extra bars strengthen slab edges, thickenings and areas under point loads. They work alongside mesh to control cracking where stresses concentrate.

The "N" indicates normal-ductility, 500MPa grade reinforcing bar, and the number is the nominal diameter in millimetres. N12 is a 12mm bar, while N16 is a 16mm bar.

Deformed bar has raised ribs along its surface that grip the concrete and resist slipping under load. Round bar is smooth, so it's generally used for dowels and lighter applications rather than main structural reinforcement.

Deformed bar is commonly supplied in stock lengths of 6-12 metres, depending on the diameter. Where a project needs other lengths, suppliers with processing equipment can cut bars to size from stock.
